Brenda Matanga is currently the Managing Attorney of BMatanga Intellectual Property Attorneys. She holds a Bachelor of Law Honours Degree (LLB) from the University of Zimbabwe and a Masters in Intellectual Property Law (LLM) from the University of Turin (Italy) in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO). She has over twelve years’ experience of practice as an intellectual property practitioner. She was trained at an established IP Firm as a Professional Assistant in the patent and trademark department where she acquired substantial experience in IP prosecution, advisory, and litigation. She later joined a leading corporate law firm where she set up and established an IP department before leaving to form her own practice eight years ago.
She worked as an attaché at the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO). She is actively involved in the development of IP in Africa, current Chairperson of the ARIPO Working Group currently amending the organisation’s legal instruments. Also the current President of the Zimbabwe Institute of Patents and Trademarks Agents (ZIPTA) and Councillor of the Law Society of Zimbabwe. Brenda has participated in a number of IP laws reform and policy making initiatives in Zimbabwe and the continent. A member of International Trademarks Association (INTA), a foreign associate member of the Chartered Institute of Patent Attorneys of the United Kingdom (CIPA), and is an alumni of University of Turin and the IP Global Exchange (Europe). She has served as a committee member of the Unreal Campaign (Anti-Counterfeiting and of the International Trade Marks Association (INTA). She has presented papers, conducted trainings and participated in a number of IP Forums, regionally and internationally.
