A term for filing a patent application in Armenia
The time for filing an Armenian patent application claiming priority is 12 months from the priority date. The filing of a corresponding request within two months is established after the expiration of the 12 months term.
Official Language of Armenia
Armenian is the official language for proceedings in the Armenian Patent Office. Foreign applicants can apply any other foreign language. Three months from the date of filing patent application, the Armenian translation of the application should be submitted.
Filing requirements in Armenia
The patent office can obtain the filing date with :
– the request to grant a patent
– the information on the applicant(s)
– the description of the invention.
A certificate of Priority Document should be submitted within three months from the filing date.
POA – It must be on filing or within three months from receiving the corresponding notification from the Armenian Patent Office. POA Legalisation or Notarisation is not required.
Examination of an Armenia patent application
Three months from the filing date, the formal examination of the application is conducted. The preliminary patents are granted at the applicant’s liability on the basis of the formal examination. it is necessary to submit substantive examination results within nine years from the Armenian filing date. The examination is carried out by a patent organization having the status of an international preliminary examination body in order to obtain a patent for 20 years. If the results are not submitted, patent validity is restricted to 10 years from the filing date instead of 20.
Novelty grace period
Any disclosure made by the inventor or other person obtain the data from the applicant within the 12 month will disaprove the novelty of the invention.
Validity term and maintenance fees
The validity term of a Patent in Armenia is 20 years from the filing date. For pharmaceutical patents and patents for agrochemicals, it is possible to apply for an extension of this term for five years. In case the patent is extended, the Supplementary Protection Certificate (SPC) is issued.

The Utility model protection is available under the Armenian legislation. It must be new, non-obvious, and industrially applicable. Classifications may be protected as utility models. The validity term of a utility model in Armenia is ten years from the filing date. The procedure for obtaining utility model protection takes approximately 1-2 years.
